The growth of fishing from a kayak during recent times prompted Idaho-based fishing accessories designer and manufacturer, EGO Fishing, to come up with several new reachable and reliable landing nets. “The thing we identified early on talking with kayak anglers is our nets had to be lightweight, unobtrusive, and easy to handle in confined spaces,” said EGO CEO and founder, Grant Corbett. With limited space on a kayak, a fishing net must slip easily into a built-in rod holder or a crate, what many kayak anglers use. One result of this is the EGO S2 Slider Compact PVC Net. This less than 2-pound net has extra reach with a handle extends from 18 to 36 inches and its hoop size is 17 x 19 inches, capable of land big fish from a good reach. Yet it’s not so bulky or cumbersome in a kayak. The netting on the S2 Slider is of PVC material for ease on fish and healthy releases. Plus, the woven fabric is tough for toothy fish to cut through, a consideration for kayak anglers fishing salty backwaters, offshore areas and northern latitude freshwater full of toothy critters. EGO Fishing nets feature aluminum, corrosion-resistant stainless steel, polypropylene-injected molded parts. Netting materials range from clear and black rubber, PVC, nylon and coated nylon. The rubber mesh helps preserves fish slime coating for healthy release and resists hook snags. MSRP ranges from $118.99 to $139.99, depending on the net construction and features. For decades, tackle manufacturers – including Northland Fishing Tackle – have been compelled to design authentic looking lures with realistic movement that gamefish want to eat. Those that work are genuine works of art. Northland says its new Elite Series Marabou Jig is one of those lures. Northland’s new marabou jig features premium handtied marabou feathers wound onto a strong, sharp, Gamakatsu hook with bait keeper. They are available in three earth-toned patterns and three sizes, 1/16-, 3/32-, and 1/8-ounce. Jeff “Gussy” Gustafson, reigning Bassmaster Classic Champion who has won several bass tournaments with his own handtied marabou jigs, says marabou finesse jigs originated in northwestern Ontario, during the late 1990s, when tournaments on Lake of the Woods and Rainy Lake began to get popular. They came south into Wisconsin’s Sturgeon Bay during the 2000s, then smallmouth anglers across the Midwest, on the Great Lakes and throughout Canada started using them. Gustafson uses a longer, softer rod, a reel with a good drag backed by 8-pound Power Pro braid with an 8-pound fluorocarbon leader for casting the light jigs. They’re fished primarily in shallow waters, 12 feet or less, he noted, especially when bass are parked next to weed clumps, logs or boulders. He swims the jig past the cover and expects a hit. A two-jig card’s MSRP is $8.99. Visit www.northlandtackle.com
