Magnum Research MLR22AT
“Simply put, this is an extraordinarly accurate rimfire .22 …”
Magnum Research MLR22AT semiautomatic .22LR shoots like a bull-barrel rifle yet weighs just 4.25 pounds. The Magnum Lite® 17-inch composite barrel weighs less than 1 pound, with graphite fibers parallel to the bore axis that the company claims make it six times stiffer than equivalent weight steel while also dissipating heat 43 percent faster than a comparable steel barrel. Receiver (with Weaver-type rail) is machined from a 6061-T6 aluminum aircraft forging. Bolt is machined from hardened 4140 steel with minimal headspace tolerances for maximum accuracy. Benz target chamber also designed specifically for top accuracy with semiauto rifles. Ruger 10/22® trigger group with 10-shot rotary magazine completes the package.
We shot CCI Standard Velocity (1,070 feet a second) target loads with 40-grain solid round-nose bullets, which the company recommends. Slower match-grade cartridges might be a tad more precise, but the semiauto action needs a little more oomph to reliably cycle rounds.
After getting the scope on the paper, our first three shots from a rest put two bullets through the same hole with the second hole touching. Simply put, this is an extraordinarily accurate rimfire .22, suitable for competitive shooting and most certainly head-shot-only squirrel hunting. Barrel is full-floated in a thumbhole 10/22® stock made of lightweight polypropylene with added fiber for stiffness and strength. Semi-palm swells on both sides of the pistol grip. The comb is slightly raised for comfortable shooting with a scope. Overall length is 35.5 inches. Suggested retail price $562. Contact: Magnum Research, Dept. Weatherproof in extreme cold or heavy rain. 50,000 hours of burn time. Kit includes headlamp, two high-capacity rechargeable batteries, halo shield, and charger. Retails for $119.
